The University YMCA seeks a mission-driven professional to provide strategic leadership for our New American Welcome Center.

Job Description

The next NAWC Director will be responsible for leading the center to meet the needs of our immigrant community today and into the future, honoring our organization’s history, while implementing a strategic vision that leads toward transformation in partnership with the community. The NAWC Director will work with the Associate Director to manage and develop a multicultural team of 12 composed of a three- person leadership team (including the NAWC Director), 6 additional full-time staff, and 6 part-time staff. The NAWC Director will be highly strategic, setting priorities decisively and collaboratively, delegating responsibilities, ensuring accountability, and effectively allocating resources to ensure results. As a University YMCA employee, the NAWC Director will serve on the YMCA's staff leadership team and represent the center before the Board of Governors.

Qualifications

Required

  • Experience equivalent to or a graduate degree in a filed related to the position responsibilities.
  • At least three years-experience leading and effectively managing a non-profit organization or program of similar staff and budget ($1M).
  • Significant experience working in immigration policy, advocacy, organizing, and/or services.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in community building, team strengthening, program development, project management.
  • Grants writing, management, and budgeting.
  • Expertise in state public funding sources related to the provision of support services, and all related regulatory reporting requirements (experience with federal funding preferred).
  • Bicultural agility, including understanding of immigrant experience and obstacles like language barriers, legal status, poverty, and racial inequity.
  • Deep understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, with proven capacity to implement these principles organizationally.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to speak in public; interact with and motivate volunteers, community leaders and staff; and write content for program materials.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in social work or non-profit management.
  • Experience with federal funding and public funding sources related to the provision of support services, and all related regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Bilingual.

Essential Functions

Fiscal Management

  • Develop and manage a fiscal year budget that is sustainable and fiscally responsible in coordination with the Associate Director and NAWC leadership.
  • Ensure sound management of operations, including budgeting, payroll, receivables, internal controls, audits, and internal and external financial reporting in coordination Associate Director and the University YMCA leadership.

Programming & Strategic Planning

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, program evaluation, and quality improvement of all NAWC programs.
  • Facilitate implementation of Champaign County Welcoming Plan in partnership with the NAWC Advisory Board and Communities of Practice in a manner that represents key stakeholders and constituencies.

Development and Fundraising

  • Oversee the annual cycle of grants management and administration, including identifying new funding sources; grant writing and submissions; managing funder and subgrantee relationships.
  • Develop a long-term donor and fund development plan in collaboration with the University YMCA leadership.
  • Cultivate relationships to strategically increase and diversify funding to ensure a consistent flow of revenue to NAWC, the Immigrant Relief Fund, and the Education for All Scholarship program.

Human Resources

  • Develop and update policies and guidelines to set a clear approach to expectations and accountability and maximize staff effectiveness and organizational health. This may include reviewing and proposing updates to the YMCA’s personnel policies & procedures, as appropriate.

Communications & Marketing

  • Ensure widespread knowledge of NAWC’s work and worth through strategic messaging, public speaking, and media relationships.
  • Oversee all communications, marketing, and outreach efforts—website, social media outlets, e-newsletter, print materials, etc.—with the goal of creating strong branding.

External Relations

  • Serve as the most visible spokesperson for NAWC, maintaining a positive image by sitting at community and political tables as a recognized leader to address challenges.
  • Cultivate productive working relationships, partnerships, and coalitions with key stakeholders including: immigrant communities, donors, grant makers, media, elected officials, and businesses, to facilitate strategic collaborations, effective advocacy, and sustainable operations.
  • Provide technical assistance to local and national partners.
