Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Staff Services Manager I, the Senior Legal Typist (SLT) performs legal secretarial duties for Administrative Law Judges (ALJ) within the Occupational Safety & Health Appeals Board, including scheduling conferences, pre-hearings, hearings and other events. Using an electronic file and information system, OASIS, generates and distributes hearing notices, proofreads documents for typographical errors, prepares Orders, Settlement Orders and Decisions and reviews motions. The incumbent maintains correspondence with parties and answers telephone inquiries.

Working Conditions

This position is located at:

The incumbent works 40 hours per week in an office setting. Air conditioned, four story building with elevator access, cubicle with natural and artificial lighting.

Coffee, Café, and dining within walking distance. Highways and Freeways accessible.

Special Requirements

This position requires the incumbent to perform sustained typing of at least 45 words per minute (wpm).

Typing Certificate – 45 WPM (words per minute) issued within the last four (4) years and certified from a five (5) minute typing test.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


Knowledge of:

Technical legal terms, various legal forms and documents and proper processing of such documents; extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, modern office methods and equipment.

Skills:

Writing, proofreading, scheduling, communication skills

Abilities to:

Master proprietary database used to calendar and track cases; read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; establish and maintain effective working relationships; prepare correspondence independently; process a variety of legal documents, spell correctly, make mathematical computations; communicate effectively; follow directions; exercise good judgment in resolving scheduling conflicts.
